The Sunken Chapel

A chapel the river took, its roof a foot under the water, the bell still on the beam.

A closer look

At the threshold

The river runs over a roof that once kept weather out. Through the water, the chapel’s lines remain legible: a door, a beam, a bell. Everything suggests a place waiting for a congregation that never properly left.

Concept notes for the illustrated atlas. The setting and its details may change as the world develops.

A planned rule of this place

Ring the bell under water and the dead sit up for one minute and give up what they were buried with; ring it twice and they do not sit back down.
